The commission tasked with planning the nation’s 250th anniversary announced a massive multi-time-zone celebration Tuesday, centered on a broadcast benefit and a synchronized series of eight “ball drops” to ring in the Semiquincentennial.

The nonpartisan U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, known as America250, revealed that the “Giving 4th” broadcast will serve as a national centerpiece for the July 4, 2026, festivities. In a departure from traditional single-location celebrations, the event will feature eight distinct midnight countdowns to honor every American time zone.

“This is about ensuring that every American, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and beyond, feels a direct connection to this historic milestone,” said Rosie Rios, Chair of America250 and former Treasurer of the United States.

The “eight-ball drop” initiative is designed to be the most inclusive countdown in U.S. history. Celebrations will trigger at midnight in the following time zones:

Eastern

Central

Mountain

Pacific

Alaska

Hawaii-Aleutian

Samoa

Chamorro (Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands)

While the iconic Times Square ball drop is traditionally reserved for New Year’s Eve, organizers say the July 4th iterations will serve as a symbolic “rebirth” for the nation’s 250th year. Each location is expected to feature local cultural performances and historical tributes unique to those regions.

The “Giving 4th” portion of the program is billed as a “historic broadcast benefit,” aimed at raising funds for various service projects and charitable initiatives across the country. Organizers have not yet released the full talent lineup, but the broadcast is expected to be carried by major networks and streaming platforms, reaching an estimated global audience of millions.

The announcement comes as preparations for the 250th anniversary intensify across all 50 states and U.S. territories. Congress established the commission in 2016 to orchestrate the year-long commemoration, which officially culminates on July 4, 2026.

Beyond the pyrotechnics and performances, commission officials emphasized that the “Giving 4th” initiative aims to encourage a “summer of service,” urging Americans to contribute to local community improvements as a birthday gift to the nation.

Detailed locations for each of the eight ball drops are expected to be announced in the coming months as the commission coordinates with local governors and municipal leaders.

The bagpipes began their mournful and triumphant wail at precisely 11:00 a.m. yesterday, cutting through a biting northwest wind that turned Fifth Avenue into a wind tunnel of Irish pride. For the 265th year, New York City paused its relentless gears to honor St. Patrick, transforming 35 blocks of Manhattan into a rhythmic emerald procession that proved, yet again, that neither time nor a blustery chill can dampen the city’s oldest tradition.

Despite the blustery conditions, an estimated two million spectators lined the route from 44th to 79th Streets. They were greeted by the familiar and heavy tread of the “Fighting 69th” Infantry Regiment, which led the march for the 175th time, their bayonets gleaming under a high and pale sun.

In an age of high definition digital spectacles, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade remains a stubbornly analog affair. There were no corporate floats, no amplified pop music, and, per strict tradition, no motorized vehicles. The roughly 150,000 marchers proceeded on foot, a sea of rhythmic motion that felt less like a parade and more like a mass pilgrimage.

“This parade is a living embodiment of the eternal relationship between Ireland and New York City,” said Grand Marshal Robert J. McCann, a dual citizen and chair of the Irish Arts Center. “The Irish came here when there werent any other jobs for them, and they built this city.”

McCann, a third generation Irish American with roots in County Armagh, led the line of march with a focus on reconciliation and culture, a nod to his decades of work strengthening ties between the United States and Northern Ireland.

The day began with the traditional morning Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where the city’s political firmament gathered in the front pews. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, attending his first parade as the city’s chief executive, joined Governor Kathy Hochul and Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the cathedral steps to review the marchers.

Credit: Michael Appleton/Mayoral Photography Office

The transit system also joined the festivities; the MTA added shamrock icons to the 4, 5, and 6 train signs at Grand Central, a small digital wink to the millions of commuters funneling into Midtown.

As the final pipe bands reached 79th Street near the American Irish Historical Society late Tuesday afternoon, the wind had not let up, but the crowd remained. For a city often accused of losing its soul to glass towers and tech hubs, the 265th parade was a reminder that New York’s heartbeat still sounds a lot like a snare drum on cold pavement.

Whether you’re a hardcore New Yorker or just here for the weekend, St. Patrick’s Day in the city is a marathon, not a sprint. This year, the holiday falls on a Tuesday (March 17), which means the city is gearing up for a full five-day bender starting from the weekend of the 14th.

From the world’s oldest parade to “spice bags” in the East Village, here are the best ways to get your green on this year.

1. March with the Masses at the 265th St. Patrick’s Day Parade

It’s the granddaddy of them all. Since 1762, NYC has been turning Fifth Avenue into a sea of emerald. The 2026 edition kicks off at 11:00 AM sharp on Tuesday, March 17. Led by Grand Marshal Robert J. McCann, the procession marches from 44th Street up to 79th Street.

The Vibe: High-energy, loud bagpipes, and enough “Fighting 69th” pride to power the grid.

Pro Tip: Arrive by 9:00 AM near St. Patrick’s Cathedral (50th-51st St) if you want a front-row seat for the Archbishop’s review.

2. Take a Cultural Deep-Dive at “40 Shades of Green”

If you prefer a fiddle to a frat party, head to the New York Irish Center in Long Island City. Their 5th annual “40 Shades of Green” is a six-hour cultural marathon featuring over 50 performers.

Why go: It’s a joyous mix of traditional music, dance, and storytelling that feels like a massive family gathering.

When: Tuesday, March 17, 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

3. It’s Paddy’s, not Patty’s at The Dead Rabbit

Tired of plastic shamrocks and green Bud Light? The FiDi legend is reclaiming the holiday with a strict “No Green Beer” policy. Instead, expect their world-famous “three-part pour” Guinness and a specialized “Paddy, Not Patty” cocktail menu.

The Vibe: Sophisticated but electric. They’re hosting comedy, DJs, and live Six Nations rugby coverage all weekend.

4. Drink History at McSorley’s Old Ale House

No St. Paddy’s is complete without a visit to the East Village’s oldest tavern. They still only serve two things: Light and Dark.

The Experience: Expect sawdust on the floors and a line down the block. It’s one of the few places where the atmosphere hasn’t changed since the 1850s.

5. Indulge in the Guinness Float at Lotte New York Palace

For something a bit more upscale, the Gold Room at the Lotte New York Palace is bringing back its decadent Guinness Float. It’s a mix of Guinness stout, three scoops of house-made Baileys ice cream, and a sidecar of Jameson.

The Vibe: Gilded Age glamour with a boozy, Irish twist.

6. Get Lucked at the Stone Street Street Festival

The Financial District’s cobblestone gem transforms into New York’s biggest outdoor Paddy’s party. From Friday, March 13 through Tuesday, March 17, a dozen outdoor bars line the street, serving everything from Guinness to “Shamrock” margaritas.

The Highlight: Saturday, March 14, features a massive block party with live Irish bands and bagpipers from noon to 10:00 PM.

Pro Tip: Come between noon and 3:00 PM if you want to snag a spot before the post-work crowd floods the cobbles.

7. Try a “Spice Bag” at Motel No Tell

The East Village is getting a taste of authentic Dublin “chipper” culture. Chef Scott Connolly is introducing the Irish Spice Bag which is a cult-favorite Irish takeaway staple consisting of salt and chili chips, crispy chicken, and peppers.

The Vibe: Trendy, casual, and perfect for soaking up a day of stout.

8. Catch Martin Hayes at Carnegie Hall

For the musically inclined, legendary fiddler Martin Hayes and the Common Ground Ensemble will be performing at Carnegie Hall on the night of the 17th.

Why go: It’s a world-class performance that elevates Irish traditional music to the grand stage.

9. Party on the Hudson with a St. Paddy’s Cruise

If you want to see the skyline turn green, hop on a Party Cruise from Pier 40. They have departures on Saturday the 14th and the big day itself.

In a move to bolster the city’s independent film scene, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the alliance known as Art House New York announced on Wednesday the launch of the first Art House Cinema Week. The event, scheduled to run from March 20 to March 26, will feature specialized programming, discounted memberships, and 5,000 free tickets for eligible New Yorkers.

The initiative arrives as many independent theaters continue to navigate a challenging economic landscape. Nearly 30 venues across the five boroughs will participate, including well known institutions like Film Forum, the IFC Center, and the Paris Theater.

“Cinema Week is a chance to celebrate the local, curated and community oriented cinemas across our city that help New York feel like New York,” said Rafael Espinal, the commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, in a statement. Mr. Espinal, who was appointed to the post last month, emphasized that the city aims to ensure the experience is available to all by funding thousands of free admissions.

Eligibility for the free tickets is broad, covering public school teachers, CUNY students, active duty military personnel, and families registered with the Cool Culture program. People with disabilities and SNAP cardholders are also eligible.

The programming schedule is dense with restorations and special appearances. Highlights include a career retrospective of the filmmaker Agnès Varda and a series celebrating actor Catherine O’Hara. At Film Forum, a screening from the Young Film Forum archives will be introduced by Joel Coen and Frances McDormand.

The partnership also highlights a new regional alliance, Art House New York, which launched last October to strengthen independent film exhibition through collective marketing and research. For many theater owners, the city’s backing provides a much needed spotlight.

“This initiative reflects our vision for an inclusive creative economy that supports the people who make art, the people who experience it, and the venues that bring it to life,” Mr. Espinal said.

Beyond the films, the week offers various perks to entice audiences back to the big screen. The Angelika Film Center is offering half off tickets for its members during the latter half of the week, while the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center will provide discounted concession combos.

For Mayor Mamdani, the son of the filmmaker Mira Nair, the initiative carries a personal resonance. City officials noted that the mayor views these independent spaces as vital cultural cornerstones where communities gather to experience the art of filmmaking.

Detailed schedules and a full list of participating theaters are available on the Art House New York website.

Tens of thousands of spectators packed the winding streets of lower Manhattan on Sunday for the 28th Annual Lunar New Year Parade, a vibrant display of culture and community marking the Year of the Horse.

The procession turned the neighborhood into a sea of red and gold. While the season’s earlier firecracker ceremonies focused on noise to ward off evil spirits, Sunday’s event was defined by the rhythmic pulse of drums and massive bursts of confetti that blanketed Mott and Canal Streets.

Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined community leaders at the front of the march. The two officials walked side by side, pausing frequently to shake hands with attendees and pose for photos under a canopy of lanterns. Their joint appearance underscored the political and cultural weight of the event as the city continues its post pandemic economic push.

The Year of the Horse is traditionally associated with energy and decisive action.

“This year is about momentum,” said Vincent Lau, a lion dancer who has performed in the parade for over a decade. “The movement of the lions and the beat of the drums show that Chinatown is not just surviving but moving forward with strength.”

The parade featured dozens of lion dance troupes and elaborate floats. Puppeteers navigated massive dragons through the dense crowds, their movements synchronized to the steady clanging of cymbals.

Security was tight along the route as the city managed the heavy influx of residents and tourists. Local businesses saw a surge in activity, with lines for bakeries and dim sum restaurants extending down several blocks.

The festivities concluded near Sara D Roosevelt Park, where families gathered for smaller performances and cultural displays. Shortly after the final float passed through Chatham Square, city sanitation crews began the process of clearing the layers of red and gold paper from the streets.

The event remains one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations in the country and a cornerstone of the city’s cultural calendar.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and community leaders gathered in East Harlem on Wednesday to celebrate the start of construction on Timbale Terrace, a development project intended to deliver 341 units of affordable housing and a major cultural hub to the area. The 19 story building is rising on a site at East 118th Street and Park Avenue that previously served as an asphalt parking lot for the New York Police Department. The project is a central piece of administration efforts to utilize city owned land for public benefit rather than vehicle storage, a specific pledge Mamdani made during his campaign to reclaim municipal property for residential use.

The development represents an early milestone in the Mamdani administration New York for All housing agenda, which seeks to triple the production of publicly subsidized homes. During his run for office, Mamdani vowed to create 200,000 new affordable units over the next decade to address the persistent housing shortage. By transforming an underutilized police lot into a residential tower, the Mayor is signaling a shift toward his promise of prioritizing people over parking.

A primary feature of the development is a 21,000 square foot permanent home for the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, which recently rebranded as Belongó. The space will offer a performance theater with 300 seats alongside recording studios and education rooms designed to preserve the musical traditions of El Barrio. Mayor Mamdani told the crowd that the city is not just building apartments but is instead creating a sanctuary for the culture that makes the neighborhood iconic. This focus on cultural preservation aligns with his broader goal of treating public spaces as essential social infrastructure that connects New Yorkers to their heritage.

Of the 341 apartments, 97 units are reserved for formerly homeless individuals who will receive on site social services. This component of the project directly addresses Mamdani campaign commitment to prioritize those with the greatest needs and move vulnerable residents out of the shelter system. The remaining homes are available to households with incomes ranging from 30 to 80 percent of the area median income, providing options for both very low income and moderate income New Yorkers.

The design of the tower follows strict standards for energy efficiency to lower carbon emissions and reduce utility bills for those living there. Such sustainable features support the Mayor vision for a greener city and his promise to integrate climate resilience into all new public housing projects. Developers expect the work to be completed by the end of 2027.

Project partners include the Lantern Organization and Mega Development. Funding for the $255 million project comes through a combination of city housing bonds and private investment along with support from the Manhattan Borough President and the City Council. Arturo O’Farrill, the founder of Belongó, said the new center will allow the organization to expand its reach and provide a stable stage for world class musicians. He called the groundbreaking a historic moment for the jazz community and a victory for cultural equity in New York.

The project is part of a broader city plan to increase housing density near transit hubs while providing dedicated space for local non profit groups. Officials said the transformation of the site from a gated lot to a community resource is a model for future developments across the five boroughs as the administration works to fulfill its long term affordability targets.

The air in Lower Manhattan today smelled less of winter exhaust and more of a sharp, nostalgic blend of sulfur and burnt paper. At Sara D. Roosevelt Park, the 28th Annual Firecracker Ceremony officially ignited the Year of the Fire Horse, transforming Chinatown into a cacophony of red, gold, and rhythmic drumming that felt more like a heartbeat than a holiday. As the clock struck 11:00 AM, strings of firecrackers were hoisted and lit, sending a thunderous crackle through the air and a blizzard of red paper scraps onto the pavement to scare away the lingering shadows of the previous year.

The celebration did not remain confined to the park, however, as the true melody of the day was found in the labyrinthine corridors of the neighborhood’s core. Along Mott Street, various local lion dance troupes led vibrant processions that brought the bustling thoroughfare to a near standstill. The ornate lions, operated by disciplined martial artists, performed the cai qing, or “plucking the green,” at storefronts as far south as Chatham Square. Shopkeepers hung heads of lettuce and red envelopes from their awnings, invitations for the lions to bring prosperity in exchange for a playful, leafy snack and a flurry of drumbeats.

The energy shifted as the processions turned onto Pell Street, where the narrow sidewalks amplified the sound of heavy wooden drums. Here, the lions navigated the street’s famous curve with acrobatic leaps and synchronized bows, blessing the tea houses and small businesses that have anchored this block for generations. Nearby, Bayard Street was closed to vehicles, transforming into a makeshift pedestrian plaza. Between the stalls of calligraphy and traditional crafts, more lions wove through the crowds, their bright silk costumes flashing against the backdrop of century-old tenements. The dancers here moved with a particular urgency, reflecting the spirited nature of the creature the city officially welcomed today.

In the Chinese zodiac, 2026 marks the arrival of the Fire Horse, a symbol defined by speed, independence, and an irrepressible spirit. Occurring only once every 60 years, the Fire Horse is a rare and potent combination; the “fire” element adds a layer of intensity to the Horse’s already energetic nature. Community elders watching the festivities today noted that while the Horse represents rapid progress and bold innovation, the year requires a steady hand on the reins to avoid burnout. The outlook for the year is one of “galloping” toward goals—a fitting theme for a city that has never quite mastered the art of standing still.

Because the Horse is a creature of stamina, the celebrations will not end with today’s sulfur smoke. The Lunar New Year is a 15-day marathon that officially concludes with the Lantern Festival on March 3. For those who missed the initial spark, the festivities continue with the Brooklyn Lunar New Year Parade in Sunset Park on Sunday, February 22. The month will conclude with a “Super Saturday” of street performances on February 28, leading into the grand finale: the 28th Annual Lunar New Year Parade, which will wind its way through the heart of Chinatown on March 1.

Such a long-distance celebration requires sustenance, and today the lines snaking out of neighborhood mainstays suggested that New Yorkers were taking the “wealth and longevity” mandate seriously. Tables were laden with symbolic staples: dumplings shaped like ancient gold ingots, whole fish to ensure abundance, and longevity noodles which, by tradition, must never be cut during the meal. As the smoke finally cleared from the streets late this afternoon, the red paper confetti remained, clinging to the damp pavement like a promise. The Horse has arrived, and for the next year, the city will be tasked with keeping up.

Schumer held aloft a rainbow flag, a symbol that has become the latest battleground in a widening cultural and legal rift between the city and the second Trump administration.

Mr. Schumer, flanked by local officials and veteran activists, announced the introduction of federal legislation designed to do what a decades-old movement once thought was settled: permanently protect the Pride flag at the Stonewall National Monument. The move follows a directive from the Department of the Interior last month that led to the flag’s quiet removal from federal parkland, sparking a week of defiance and protests in Greenwich Village.

“Stonewall is sacred ground,” Mr. Schumer said, his voice echoing across Christopher Park. “The Pride flag is not a decoration. It is a testament to a struggle that began right here. This legislation will ensure that no administration, now or in the future, can ever strip it away again.”

The bill, co-sponsored in the House by Representative Dan Goldman, Democrat of New York, seeks to designate the Pride flag as a “congressionally authorized symbol.” If passed, it would bypass the executive branch’s authority over federal flagpoles, codifying the rainbow banner’s right to fly alongside the Stars and Stripes at national monuments dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. history.

A Policy of ‘Consistency’

The controversy began in earnest on Jan. 21, when the National Park Service issued a memo largely restricting the flags flown on its properties to the American flag, the Department of the Interior flag, and the POW/MIA flag. While the administration framed the move as an effort to ensure “consistency” and “neutrality” across federal lands, critics in New York saw it as a deliberate act of erasure.

By early February, the large rainbow flag at Stonewall had vanished. In its place, federal officials left only an empty lanyard on the flagpole that sits on federally managed land.

The removal followed a year of incremental shifts in how the administration handles the site. Since returning to office in 2025, the Trump administration has directed federal agencies to “remove improper ideology” from national memorials. At Stonewall, this resulted in the removal of the terms “transgender” and “bisexual” from the monument’s official website and the banning of the “Progress Pride” flag, which includes colors representing trans people and marginalized communities.

Defiance in the Village

The administration’s quiet retreat from the site’s symbolism was met with a loud response from New Yorkers. On Feb. 12, activists and local leaders gathered at Christopher Park to “re-raise” the flag in open defiance of the federal directive. As of Monday, the flag remains on the pole, maintained by a community that insists the monument belongs to the people who fought for it in 1969.

“You can actually see the footprints where, in the dark of night, park officials entered and removed the flag,” said Brad Hoylman-Sigal, the Manhattan Borough President. “Our history will not be erased by a memo from Washington.”

For the White House, the flag policy is part of a broader mandate to “restore truth and sanity” to the nation’s historical narrative. A spokesperson for the National Park Service stated that the agency would continue to “interpret the site’s historic significance through exhibits,” but maintained that non-agency flags “do not belong on federal poles.”

A Symbolic Uphill Battle

With Republicans controlling both the House and the Senate, Mr. Schumer’s legislation faces a steep climb. Yet for the Minority Leader, the bill is as much about political positioning as it is about preservation. By forcing a vote on the Pride flag, Democrats hope to draw a sharp contrast with the administration’s social agenda ahead of the 2026 midterms.

As the sun set over the West Village on Sunday, the rainbow flag continued to snap in the wind, just a few feet from the federal boundary where the dispute remains unresolved. For the activists who have spent their lives defending Stonewall, the piece of cloth has become a proxy for a much larger struggle.

“They think they can take down a flag and we’ll disappear,” said Ann Northrop, a long-time activist. “They haven’t been paying attention to what happened here fifty-seven years ago.”

In a moment defined by the collapse of boundaries between art and design, organism and algorithm, craft and science, Sculpting the Senses arrives at the Brooklyn Museum as a statement of intent. The North American debut of Iris van Herpen’s landmark exhibition opens to the public on May 16, 2026, anchoring a season of cultural exploration and positioning the Dutch designer not simply as a couturier but as one of fashion’s most rigorous thinkers working at the intersection of aesthetics, biology, and technology.

Stepping into the galleries feels less like entering a retrospective than entering an immersive environment. Light refracts across translucent forms that appear to float rather than hang in space. Sound moves gently through the rooms, an ambient score that shapes the experience as much as the garments themselves. The dresses shimmer, ripple, and curve as if animated by unseen forces, evoking ocean currents, cellular structures, and planetary motion. Nothing feels static. Everything feels alive.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1835" height="1376" src="https://picturesofnyc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/IVH-David-Uzochukwu-S.jpg" alt="Iris van Herpen.
At the heart of the exhibition are more than one hundred couture creations spanning van Herpen’s career. These are not garments in a conventional sense. They are sculptural propositions that exist between clothing, architecture, and anatomy. Some evoke the delicate branching of coral reefs, others express the aerodynamic logic of wings or the skeletal elegance of bone. Materials range from hand worked textiles to experimental synthetics developed through advanced fabrication techniques, each piece balancing precision with organic fluidity.

The exhibition unfolds thematically, allowing visitors to move through elemental worlds of water, air, and earth. Alongside the couture works are contemporary artworks and natural objects including fossils, shells, and anatomical forms. This dialogue underscores van Herpen’s longstanding fascination with natural systems and her belief that fashion belongs within a broader ecological and scientific conversation.

Van Herpen’s work has always been rooted in paradox. She embraces traditional couture techniques while also pushing the possibilities of new technologies. Her Amsterdam studio operates as a laboratory of ideas where artisans, engineers, scientists, and artists collaborate. The result is work that feels both ancient and futuristic, intimate and expansive.

Presented in Brooklyn, the exhibition takes on added resonance. The museum’s history of framing fashion within cultural and artistic contexts makes it an ideal setting for van Herpen’s work, which resists easy categorization. Here, clothing becomes a medium for exploring the body’s relationship to space, environment, and transformation.

Sculpting the Senses ultimately proposes a vision of fashion that is intellectual as well as sensory. It invites viewers not just to look but to feel and to consider how design can mirror the invisible systems that shape the world around us. In doing so, Iris van Herpen expands the language of couture and reminds us that fashion, at its most ambitious, can be a way of understanding the universe itself.

On Monday, New York City will pause to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While events are scheduled across the five boroughs, the center of gravity for this commemoration has long been the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). This year holds special significance as BAM hosts its 40th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., marking four decades of what has become the city’s largest public celebration of the civil rights leader.

The event, presented in partnership with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, is not merely a ceremony; it is a call to action. It brings together world renowned activists, musicians, and civic leaders to explore Dr. King’s vision not as a historical artifact, but as a living blueprint for addressing the injustices of the present day.

The Main Event: Keynote and Performances

The tribute begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Howard Gilman Opera House. The program is anchored by a keynote address from Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II. A towering figure in modern civil rights and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign, Rev. Barber is expected to deliver a speech that bridges the gap between Dr. King’s moral philosophy and contemporary struggles for economic and social justice.

The morning will also feature a powerful artistic program. Khalia Campbell, a member of the acclaimed Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE dance company, will perform a solo excerpt from Grace. Titled “Mother God,” the piece is a spiritual journey set to movement, originally created for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Musical accompaniment will be provided by The Fire Ensemble, a dynamic intergenerational choir led by Troy Anthony that centers BIPOC and queer voices. Their performance promises to be an inspiring blend of gospel and R&B.

Schedule of Activities

The celebration extends well beyond the morning tribute. BAM has curated a full day of free programming designed to engage every generation:

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: The 40th Annual Tribute in the Howard Gilman Opera House.

11:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.: BAMkids Celebrates MLK Day. Located in The Adam Space (BAMcafé), this family-focused program features interactive activities like “Run, Walk, Crawl—Just Move!” and letter-writing workshops (“Dear Future Me”) that help children connect with Dr. King’s message of resilience.

1:00 p.m.: A free screening of the film Just Mercy at BAM Rose Cinemas. Based on the memoir by Bryan Stevenson, the film tells the true story of a lawyer’s fight to free a wrongly convicted man.

Post-Tribute: A performance by the Brooklyn Music School’s intergenerational choir on the steps of the Peter Jay Sharp Building.

How to Participate

All events for the BAM MLK Tribute are free and open to the public, but demand is always high.

Tickets: Tickets for the main tribute in the Opera House will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 19, in the lobby of the Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Avenue).

RSVP: While you can RSVP online at BAM.org to receive updates, an RSVP does not guarantee entry. Arriving early is strongly recommended to secure a seat.

Virtual Option: For those unable to attend in person, the main tribute will be livestreamed on BAM.org. Note that the livestream will only be available during the event and will not be archived for later viewing.
